Early Life

Born Durk Derrick Banks on October 19, 1992, the rapper more widely known as Lil Durk was brought up in the southern part of Chicago, Illinois, specifically in Englewood. The absence of his father, incarcerated when Durk was just seven months old, led to him taking on significant responsibilities at home from an early age. He often recalls times during his childhood when food was scarce in the household. Despite these early hardships, Durk developed a passion for music and started gaining popularity through social media platforms like Myspace and YouTube. The birth of his own child at 17, and a decision to drop out of Paul Robeson High School to join the Black Disciples, a local street gang, marked a turning point in Durk’s life. His new responsibilities, along with a stint in jail for gun charges, spurred him to take his budding music career seriously.

Family Life

Durk’s family has had a significant influence on his life and music. His father, Dontay Banks Sr., was serving two life sentences without parole, an event that shaped Durk’s early life. He also had an older brother, Dontay Banks Jr., who was known as DThang. As of 2024, Durk is the father of six children and is engaged to his longtime girlfriend, India Royale. His cousin, rapper McArthur “OTF Nunu” Swindle, was murdered in 2014, followed by the death of his friend and manager, Uchenna “OTF Chino Dolla” Agina, in 2015. In 2020, Lil Durk’s affiliate King Von was murdered in Atlanta. Then, in May of the following year, Durk’s brother, Dontay “DThang” Banks Jr, was tragically killed outside a Chicago nightclub.
