Early Life

John Fogerty grew up in El Cerrito, California, as the third of five boys. His parents, Galen Robert and Edith Lucile (Lytle) Fogerty, both had roots in Iowa and Montana, respectively. John’s father worked as a Linotype operator, while his mother taught second grade. Fogerty first attended a Catholic school, the School of the Madeleine, before transferring to Harding Grammar School and later to El Cerrito High School. It was here that he met the other future members of Creedence Clearwater Revival (CCR) and took guitar lessons from Barry Olivier, the creator and producer of the Berkeley Folk Festival. In junior high, he formed a cover band with Stu Cook and Doug Clifford called the Blue Velvets, later joined by his older brother Tom. The band, eventually renamed The Golliwogs, signed with Fantasy Records in 1964 and released several singles. Though these early efforts didn’t achieve commercial success, Fogerty’s musical journey eventually led to the formation of the legendary rock band, Creedence Clearwater Revival.

Family Life

John Fogerty married Martha Paiz in 1965, and the couple had three children together. They eventually divorced in the 1970s. In 1986, he met Julie Kramer while on tour, and they got married in 1991. Together, they have two sons (Shane and Tyler) and a daughter (Kelsy). Fogerty’s sons now perform with him in concerts, and all three of his youngest children appear in his YouTube channel videos.
