Early Life

Born Andre Romelle Young on February 18, 1965, in Compton, California, Dr. Dre grew up in a musically inclined family. His middle name, Romelle, is derived from his father’s amateur R&B group, the Romells. Dre’s parents divorced in 1972, and he was mostly raised by his grandmother in the New Wilmington Arms housing project in Compton. Dre attended several schools due to gang violence and poor grades, eventually focusing on his social life and entertainment during his high school years.

Family Life

Dr. Dre has fathered six children with five different women. He has a son named Curtis with Cassandra Joy Greene, a daughter named La Tanya Danielle Young with Lisa Johnson, a son named Andre Young Jr. (who tragically passed away in 2008) with Jenita Porter, a son named Marcel with singer Michel’le, and two children, Truice and Truly, with his now ex-wife Nicole Threatt. In December 2021, Dre and Nicole finalized their divorce, with Dre reportedly paying $100 million of his estate to Nicole.

Health

On January 5, 2021, Dr. Dre suffered a brain aneurysm and was admitted to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center’s ICU in Los Angeles. Many celebrities, including LeBron James, Martin Lawrence, LL Cool J, Missy Elliott, Snoop Dogg, Ice Cube, 50 Cent, Ellen DeGeneres, Ciara, and her husband Russell Wilson, offered their support. In February, he was released, posting on Instagram: “Thanks to my family, friends, and fans for their interest and well wishes. I’m doing great and getting excellent care from my medical team. I will be out of the hospital and back home soon.”

Death

Contrary to some rumors, Dr. Dre is not dead. As of April 2024, he remains alive and continues to be active in the music industry. His health scare in 2021 was a major concern for fans, but he has since recovered and is doing well.
