Born and raised in Los Angeles, California, Alan Hale MacKahan grew up in a family deeply rooted in the film industry. His father, Rufus Edward MacKahan, was a renowned character actor who used the stage name Alan Hale, while his mother, Gretchen Hartman, was a successful silent film actress. As a baby, Hale Jr. even appeared in silent films alongside his parents.
During World War II, Hale served in the United States Coast Guard. After his father’s death in 1950, he dropped the “Junior” from his name and continued to build his acting career.

Family Life

Alan Hale Jr. was married twice in his lifetime. His first marriage was to Bettina Reed Doerr on March 12, 1943, in Hollywood. The couple had four children together: Alan Brian, Chris, Lana, and Dorian. Unfortunately, they eventually divorced. In 1964, Hale married former singer Naomi Grace Ingram, and the couple remained together until his death in 1990.

Health and Death

Sadly, Alan Hale Jr. died of thymus cancer at the age of 68. He passed away on January 2, 1990, at St. Vincent Medical Center in Los Angeles. Following his death, his body was cremated, and his ashes were scattered into the Pacific Ocean. At his memorial service, his Gilligan’s Island co-star, Dawn Wells, attended to represent the surviving cast members.
